Using the Metabones Speed Booster on the Sony FS700

Last week I took delivery on a new adaptor from Metabones – the Speed Booster. It’s a great new piece of kit that promises to bring new opportunities to shooting on APS-C (and soon to be micro four thirds) sized sensor cameras. More more info on how the speed booster works click here to view a post from last week.

A few days ago, I went down to the coast in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs with Roman Mongin to shoot a few clips with the new adaptor and also a new lens i recently bought – the Rokinon 35mm T1.5.

Roman brought his 5d so we did an impromptu and very unscientific comparison test between the two cameras – the Canon 5d and the FS700 with Speed Booster attached. We shot most of the shots wide open using either the Rokinon 35mm or the Canon 50mm F1.4. The surf was also up at the time from ex tropical cyclone Oswald so it was definitely an opportunity to bring out some slow motion on the FS700.

I think the Speed Booster performed very well with both lenses, the depth of field attainable on the f1,4 lenses was extremely shallow when wide open, on paid jobs i’d be hesitant to use the lens wide open as i felt it lost a lot of sharpness compared to when the lens was closed down a stop or two.

There did seem to be more purple glow / fringes coming off the highlights of the FS700
